Nestled just moments from the sun-drenched Amalfi Coast, one of the newest Coldwell Banker Italy offices in Salerno is more than a real estate hub—it’s a gateway to la dolce vita. Broker Owner Alessia Di Majo invites us into her world, where ancient Roman history meets seaside charm, and every cobblestone street tells a story. From the vibrant promenade of Salerno to the lemon-scented cliffs of Positano, Alessia paints a picture of a region where beauty, culture, and community are woven into everyday life. Her passion for the land is palpable, whether she’s describing a perfect day that begins with a warm sfogliatella or recounting the magic of a sunset boat ride along the coast.
Alessia shares her insider perspective on what makes this corner of Italy so irresistible—from the region’s culinary treasures like Mozzarella di Bufala and scialatielli ai frutti di mare, to the timeless allure of handcrafted Vietri ceramics and the legendary hospitality of its people. “Salerno and the Amalfi Coast are living paintings, where mountains plunge into the sea and villages seem suspended between sky and earth. Amalfi, with its imposing cathedral, tells stories of sailors and merchants. Positano, with its pastel-colored houses, is a jewel set in the rock,” Di Majo poetically describes the individual charms of each town. Not to mention, there is a variety of real estate on offer, should you wish to extend a vacation into something more permanent. She shares “the real estate market in Campania is a mosaic of opportunities, from the exclusive villas of the Amalfi Coast, reaching million-euro prices, to the more affordable apartments in Salerno and Cilento. Here, a home is not just a property but a legacy to pass down, a deep bond with the land and its roots.”
Whether you’re dreaming of a seaside villa, a hillside retreat, or simply a taste of authentic Italian living, Salerno offers more than properties—it offers a lifestyle. Step into Alessia’s world and discover why this enchanting region is not just a destination, but a place to call home.
Where do you live? I live in the vibrant heart of the South, where the sun kisses the land and the sea sings ancient melodies. My home is in Salerno, just 2 km from the divine Amalfi Coast, with its gems like Positano and Amalfi, as well as other villages. Salerno boasts a millennia-old history, with evidence dating back to Roman times. The city was home to the Salerno Medical School, the first and most important medical institution in Europe during the Middle Ages. The Cathedral of Salerno, with its imposing architecture, is a symbol of the city. In 1944, Salerno became the capital of Italy for a short period. Salerno’s seafront promenade is one of the most beautiful in Italy, offering breathtaking views of the gulf. The city is surrounded by hills and mountains, providing numerous opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities.
What is the perfect weekend day like? The perfect day… starts with a coffee that awakens your soul, perhaps enjoyed with a warm sfogliatella (a classic Italian pastry with flaky layers). Then, a stroll through the narrow streets of Salerno, listening to the lively chatter of the locals and admiring the shimmering seafront. But the real magic? Taking a ferry and letting the waves lull you towards Positano or Amalfi. There, you can lose yourself among the colorful houses clinging to the cliffs, breathe in the crisp sea air, and maybe dive into crystal-clear waters… And in the evening? A dinner of the freshest seafood in a charming little restaurant with a breathtaking view, accompanied by a fine local wine and the sound of waves crashing on the shore.
What are the common modes of transportation there? Here in our region, people walk a lot since everything is easily accessible. In a city like Salerno, we have the central train station, with high-speed trains reaching Naples in an hour and Rome in about two hours. The “Costa D’Amalfi” airport is just 30 minutes from the center. Additionally, there are buses that connect various neighborhoods within the town.
To fully enjoy the Amalfi Coast, the best option is to take the ferries that connect the towns by sea, offering breathtaking views. Along the coast, there are also local buses, but be prepared for some winding roads! Of course, there are cars, but finding parking, especially in summer, can be a heroic task. Many people also love renting scooters or boats. In short, there’s no shortage of options, but the most charming means of transport remains the boat, which takes you from one gem to another along our coast.
Tell us about the foods your area is known for. Where do I even start? Our cuisine is a celebration of joy and the authentic flavors of Mediterranean cooking. In Salerno, you can’t miss Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, a burst of fresh, creamy milk, and San Marzano tomatoes, red and juicy like rubies—not to mention the pizza! Then come the heartwarming first courses: pasta e fagioli with mussels, scialatielli ai frutti di mare, bursting with the true taste of the sea, and eggplant parmigiana, a masterpiece of flavors.
On the Amalfi Coast, lemons reign supreme—their intense aroma is used to make limoncello. As for desserts, baba and sfogliatella steal the show. And you must try colatura di alici, the traditional anchovy fish sauce and essence of the coast. And in Cilento? This is where the Mediterranean diet was born! Here, you’ll find Alici di Menaica, fragrant extra virgin olive oil, and Cilento white figs… I could go on listing endless local specialties, but these are places meant to be visited, where you can discover for yourself the incredible bounty of our extraordinary land.
What is your favourite meal, at home or at a restaurant? My favorite meal… It’s like asking a mother which child she loves the most! But if I really must choose, I’d go with something simple yet deeply tied to our essence: a homemade spaghetti alle vongole veraci, made with love and the freshest ingredients. The scent of the sea rising from the pan, the garlic sizzling in the oil, the sweet taste of the clams… it’s a unique emotion. Of course, dining in a seaside restaurant has its charm, but the simplicity and love poured into preparing a dish at home—letting the aromas fill the kitchen—is simply priceless.
Where do you recommend someone vacation in your region and why? You absolutely must start with Salerno, where you can also stay, and then take a ferry to the Amalfi Coast. Positano is a dream come true, with its cascade of colorful houses, artisan shops, and enchanting beaches. Amalfi, with its thousand-year history, majestic Cathedral, and elegant atmosphere, will steal your heart. And then there’s Ravello, with its breathtaking panoramic gardens, sunset concerts, and the stunning Villa Rufolo. But don’t forget about Cilento, a hidden gem with wild beaches, ancient villages, and unspoiled nature. Every corner of our region has something special to offer—it all depends on what you’re looking for: the glamour of Positano, the history of Amalfi, or the peace and authenticity of Cilento… But one thing is certain: wherever you go, beauty will surround you, and the warmth of our hospitality will make you feel at home.
What is your favourite recreational or leisure time activity? In summer, I love taking my boat out—even alone—going for a swim and then lying in the sun. Other times, I just hop on my scooter without a set destination, letting the winding roads guide me through the hills and along the coast, discovering hidden villages where time seems to stand still. There are still places even for me yet to be explored. Or sometimes, I simply sit on the beach at sunset, watching the sun dive into the sea—these are moments of pure magic that recharge my soul.
Is there a specialty your area is known for? We are famous worldwide for our Amalfi Coast lemons, unique in fragrance and flavor, so much so that they hold the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certification. These lemons are used to produce the famous limoncello, a sweet, aromatic liqueur that symbolizes our hospitality. Then there’s our craftsmanship: the ceramics of Vietri sul Mare, with their vibrant colors, the handmade leather sandals of Positano, and the delicate coral jewelry. And let’s not forget our warm and genuine hospitality—here, we welcome you as a friend, offering you a coffee, a smile, and making you feel like part of our big family.
Share a little known but interesting fact about the area/region: Did you know that the compass is said to have been invented in Amalfi? According to tradition, a certain Flavio Gioia, born right here, is believed to have made significant improvements to this essential navigation tool. Although the story is debated, Amalfi’s connection to the sea and maritime history is ancient and fascinating. And have you ever heard of “lampare”? These are traditional fishing boats used at night, equipped with powerful lamps to attract fish. Seeing their flickering lights on the sea at night is a mesmerizing sight, one that takes you back in time.
If you were to live in any other region where we have a Coldwell Banker presence, where would it be and why? Great question! If I had to choose another Italian region with Coldwell Banker, I’d say Tuscany. I love its rolling landscapes, the medieval villages full of history and art, and its outstanding food and wine culture. There’s an elegance and timeless beauty that truly fascinates me. I picture myself living in a stone farmhouse surrounded by vineyards and olive groves… a dream! But, let’s be honest, the pull of our sea and sunshine is always so strong!
